28 January - Sugar Factory

Another Monday, another grumpy me! Anyway, today I thought I’d warble about a (very belated) Christmas gift I received in the post as a nice “now it’s not Christmas” surprise! It’s an album called Sugar Factory and it’s by Fred Frith and Evelyn Glennie.

Fred Frith is known as a guitarist and Evelyn Glennie as a highly skilled percussionist, so this CD is of great interest to me! Having had the chance to see Evelyn perform a couple of years ago, I can say that she is a wonderful and fascinating musician. To set her further apart from the rest, she is profoundly deaf and has been since age 12.  She regularly performs barefoot to help her feel the music.

This CD is an interesting collaboration of the two that was recorded in a disused Sugar Factory, hence the name. As yet I have not listened to it fully, but it really opens your ears to different sounds, as it is certainly not full of your conventional tunes. It’s vibrant and rhythmic and uses the variety of intriguing sounds to portray emotion. It’s like nothing I’ve heard nor listened to before and I just find it incredibly fascinating, so pray do excuse my rambling on about it!

I can’t say today has brought much further news, so I will wrack my (very little) brains for a question now…What’s your favourite music genre?
